Japanese Terms

Here you will find the Japanese terms and translations of those terms we use most frequently in the dojo.

Ryu Renshi-Dan Karate
  • Translation: “The Way of Honorable People”
  • Blend of three different Japanese martial arts: Isshinryu (Tatsuo Shimabuku.), Shotokan (Gichin Funakoshi), Goju (Chojun Miyagi).
Basic Class Etiquette
  • Bow Upon Entering/Leaving the Dojo. Bow towards the direction of the showmen (wall with the pictures/flags).
  • Always acknowledge the Head Sensei upon entering/leaving the dojo. It is disrespectful to not greet them.
  • There is 1 lead Sensei to a class. The high ranking Sensei should always be bowed to if on the training floor when class begins.
  • You are to always address other instructors by their proper names and titles.

Sempai – Assistant Instructor

Sensei – Instructor

Shihan – Master Instructor

Hanshi – Grand Master

Dojo – Training hall / school

OSU – respectful greeting, acknowdlegement or understanding of command

Rei – Bow

Sensei Ni Rei – Bow facing teacher

Otaigai Ni Rei – Bow facing eachother

Showmen Ni Rei – Bow facing front

Karate – Empty Hand

Karate Do – The Way of Karate

Karateka – Practitioner of Karate

Hai – Yes, understand

Kiai – Spirit Shout/ Focus of energy

Kihon – Basics/Fundamentals

Mokuso – Meditate / Gather thoughts

Bunkai – Practical kata applications

Yoi – Ready

Kamae – ready position

Hajime – start/begin

Yamae – finish /stop

Mawate – turn

Gi – uniform

Obi – belt

Kumite – sparring

Tai Sabaki – body shifting/footwork

Dachi – stance

Zenkutsu dachi – long stance

Miki Shizen-Tai dachi – right side back natural fighting stance

Hidari shizen-tai dachi – left side back natural fighting stance
