About Us

Welcome! To Westchester Counties longest operating karate school!

Ryu Renshi-Dan (Dobbs Ferry Karate) opened its doors in 1977 in the wonderful rivertown of Dobbs Ferry, NY. This was a dream of Hanshi Jose Guzman, 9th degree Black Belt and true pioneer of martial arts history and education in New York and beyond.

Dobbs Ferry Karate is an eclectic blend of Shotokan, Goju and Isshinryu karate styles. We believe in teaching the traditional martial arts practices and exercises to our students.

Our instructors are well versed in other martial arts styles and incorporate those into their daily teachings and curriculum. Therefore, students will also have the benefit of learning weapons (Bo staff, nunchuk, sai, escrima) as well as Judo and Jiu-Jitsu. These offerings make our students extremely well rounded practitioners, fighters and competitors.

Hanshi Guzman is still very active in the arts today. He is affiliated with many national and international martial arts organizations, serves on examination boards and is sought out for his knowledge of history and extensive experience teaching of the arts for over 50 years.

In 2009, Hanshi Guzman passed over the reigns of the Dojo to his son, Shihan Chris. Shihan has added many new class offerings to the schedule as well as created a lot of kids programming activities such as summer camps, parents night out events, birthday parties etc.
